De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe

There’s a famous (in Holland at least) historical swashbuckling adventure story called De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe (or, Bontekoe’s cabin boys). The story is an adaptation by Johan Fabricius of a 16th century sea captain’s memoires told from the point of view of his three cabin boys.

In Hoorn harbour there is a statue commemorating the three boys (top) and in the Noorderkerk (below) there is the burial marker of the captain, Ysbrant Willemssoon Bontekoe.

This November a movie adaptation of the story is due to be released in Holland; here’s hoping a version with English subtitles is released in due course.
