The top picture is a regular panorama, composed from 5 separate shots using Autostitch. The lower picture, Planet Loire, uses a simple manipulation (click through to Flickr for a link to a tutorial): using Gimp, stretch the horizontal axis to match the number of pixels on the horizontal and then use Filter > Distorts > Polar coordinates to distort to the ‘planet’ look.
